It is in their very nature as their mission is to watch out for the interest of their constituents. Sooner or later that will lead to trying to carve out special privileges.

Doesn't matter what group that is, racial, ethnic, religious, industry, social etc.. Politics would benefit most from banning all of them from the political discourse.

Every Mac sold comes with enough software that you could set up your own services using your DSL or Cable Internet connection. Macs have web severs, FTP servers, email and "all the UNIX Stuff" You already have an iDisk right there on your desk that could be accessed from any computer that has a browser but it's easier for most people to pay $100 than to figure out how to make it work.


or you pay $100 because its not just $8.25 a month. how much will it cost you in time (yours), internet access costs, electricity, potential downtime etc. to "do it yourself".

I'm in australia, so its $129 here i think.

however. i currently make $50/hr so, unless i can guarantee that ALL functionality provided by .Mac will take me less than 2 1/2 hours a year (ignoring the cost of electricity for a machine running 24x7) its financially better for me to pay the $129.

Great posts, guys. Well worth reading. But I think some of you need to take a closer look at WHY MHz/GHz doesn't matter as much.

First of all, the Px does not have the Velocity Engine, and OS 10.1/2 uses it. There is a dramatic performance over the G4 (and especially later G3s) with 10.2, as the operating system is now more effeciant. Also, OS X takes advantage of dual processors to a certain degree (maybe an extra 50 percent or so). Finally, when you take a look at the new PowerMacs, you are looking at 4MB of L3 Cache (w/ dual 1.25GHz). The Px don't seem to have that (if any). So, basically, that would bring a 64-bit system (in terms of the P4) to about 4 or 5GHz right there.

Now, take a look at the PC. Sure, the PC has incredible boot time, is great for playing games, and has a quick OS. However, the P4 lacks the necessity of an effecient L1 Cache. I do not see how 4Kb will provide enough memory for the complex operations tha Macs can handle. So, instead of a 4.7GHz, you're looking at, maybe, 3.x or 4GHz, assuming, with this new chip, the L1 cache has remained unchanged.

The only reasons Macs appear to be bogged down are because of the slower bus speeds (167MHz (Mac) compared to 333MHz or faster (PC) w/BOTH having DDR-RAM) and because not all applications support the Velocity Engine. It may not be THAT big of a difference, but it does bring the overall speed of the G4 down, when compared to a P4. Apple's apps sure work with OS X and the VE, but not a whole lot of other apps. In these cases (varies on how often, depending on what percentage of application usage involves the VE) the overall speed of the G4 (in relative terms to a P4) would decrease significantly, and that's one of the other reasons why were are getting hit badly.

I honestly don't see how a G5 (IF it comes out) would help, unless it was able to *fool* non-VE apps to thinking that data is going in 64-bit pathways, and the G5 could split that to 128-bit or even 256-bit pathways. Otherwise, the G4 will NOT be beneficial in the long run.

The guy in the link is talking about raising revenue only, and since I can't find his post critiqued elsewhere (though it's quoted elsewhere), I don't know how accurate his numbers are. In any case, he doesn't seem to be including any cuts to the budget, which is ridiculous. Nor does he account for the fact that the recession has produced an ebb in tax revenues which will recede as jobs come back. It's a pretty one-dimensional argument.

That's true but I can't understand how anyone can be looking at this years budget deficit on top of the entire 14trillion+ deficit and not saying America needs huge (in the trillions) cuts and now. If his numbers are even close to right then there is just no way the US can conceivably pay off even this years deficit. What if the recovery doesn't happen fast enough or at all? The united states goes bankrupt.

IMO there is no recovery happening just fluctuations in statistics. The structural problems in the US are worse than they were in 07-08 and they are getting worse.

These days much of the craftsmanship that used to take place in the darkroom coaxing a master print from a negative now takes place digitally. A technically well exposed frame can still produce a crappy print at the end of a less skilled artist. Conversely, technical perfection (second curtain sync, hyperfocal distancing gobbledygook) has very little to do with art, or even creativity. Great "art" these days is even being shot on a cellphone.

Both camps (the technical-crats & the ones who are blissfully unaware of the minutiae) can produce "great" work.

Many beginners suffer from the same bad pshop skills (hey, look... I can make grass grow on his head, no make that two heads) and mistakes that beginning designers can (hey look, I can make EACH letter a different color, and a different font).

All that being said, if I was teaching beginning photographers I would remove almost everything to start (camera, lens, etc.) and go primitive and start with building pinhole cameras. Then I would progress to the end point which would be post-processing. Post-processing is huge though...

I'm not saying PP isn't important, but if you take beginners that learn to get the best picture possible in the camera (focusing on composition, exposure, etc) first then worry about learning PP the images always turn out better then those who take crap in the camera and try and fix it in Photoshop.

Not to mention, as Winni said RAW workflow programs are usually all you need unless you are doing commercial or portraiture where skin smoothing or other things are needed.

Photoshop is used far to much as a crutch than an enhancement tool.

Sekilas Tentang Tony Q Rastafara

Pria asal kota Semarang Jawa Tengah, terlahir dengan nama Tony Waluyo Sukmoasih. Memulai karier bermusiknya sejak tahun 1989 dengan band Roots Rock Reggae. Biasa manggung dari kafe ke kafe atau acara pentas musik yang ada di Jakarta. Setelah bergabung dan membentuk banyak band reggae seperti Exodus Band, Rastaman Band, hingga akhirnya pada tahun 1994 membentuk band yang cukup terkenal sebagai pengusung aliran musik reggae di Indonesia pada masa itu yaitu Rastafara. Bersama Rastafara sempat merilis dua album “Rambut Gimbal” pada tahun 1996 dan “Gue Falling In Love” pada tahun 1997.

Hampir semua lagu-lagu di album tersebut diciptakan sendiri oleh Tony Q,lirik lagunya kebanyakan bercerita tentang tema sosial, kemanusiaan, cinta dan tema kehidupan masyarakat sehari-hari. Salah satu lagunya yang cukup populer pada masa itu adalah ”Rambut Gimbal” sebuah istilah untuk style rambut Dreadlock dalam bahasa asing yang kemudian secara tidak langsung dijadikan istilah dalam bahasa Indonesia dan menjadi populer dikarenakannya lagu tersebut. Perbedaan Rastafara pada saat itu dengan band reggae lainnya adalah karena mereka berhasil memasukan dan memadukan unsur-unsur musik tradisional dengan gaya khas Indonesia kedalam musiknya sehingga terbentuklah musik reggae ala Indonesia yang bisa terlepas dari bayang-bayang musik reggae dunia seperti Bob Marley, UB40 atau Jimmy Cliff. Penggunaan alat-alat musik tradisional seperti Kendang sunda atau Gamelan jawa juga ikut menambah warna musik Indonesia didalam lagu-lagu Rastafara. Dan pada aransemen musiknya sepintas juga terlihat unsur-unsur musik melayu atau bahkan musik khas daerah sumatera utara dan sumatera barat.

Pada tahun 1997 Rastafara memutuskan untuk vakum dalam bermusik, hingga akhirnya Tony Q memutuskan untuk membentuk band baru dengan tetap membawa nama Rastafara. Maka pada tahun 1998 terbentuklah Tony Q & New Rastafara, dengan format band additional player. Tetapi kemudian Tony Q memutuskan untuk bersolo karier dengan tetap membawa nama bandnya Tony Q Rastafara, yang berhasil merilis album pada tahun 2000 yaitu ”Damai Dengan Cinta”. Pada album ke tiganya ini lah Tony Q mulai menapaki puncak kariernya dalam musik reggae di Indonesia, karena album inilah seorang Professor di bidang musik dari Canada memberikannya referensi untuk mengirimkan demo untuk ikut dalam ajang Bob Marley Festival di Amerika. Pihak penyelenggara Festival tersebut menyukai lagu-lagu yang ada di album tersebut dan kemudian mengundang Tony Q untuk tampil diacara tersebut pada tahun 2002, tapi sayang sekali Tony Q beserta rombongannya tidak mendapat izin visa dari Kedutaan Amerika dikarenakan alasan keamanan terkait dengan Tragedi WTC 11 September di Amerika yang terjadi berdekatan dengan rencana keberangkatan Tony Q ke Amerika.

Pada tahun 2003 albumnya yang ke empat berjudul ”Kronologi” di rilis, lagu pada album tersebut merupakan kumpulan dari beberapa lagu dari album-album sebelumnya dan juga beberapa lagu yang belum sempat dirilis. Kemudian pada tahun 2005 Tony Q kembali merilis albumnya yang terbaru bertitel ”Salam Damai” dengan membawa misi dan visi yang ingin disampaikan tentang perdamaian, dalam album ini Tony Q mencoba menggabungkan musik reggae dengan unsur musik orchestra tetapi tidak lupa memasukan unsur tradisional bahkan pada album ini terdapat juga lagu-lagu dengan lirik bahasa sunda dan jawa yang semakin menambah kental unsur tradisional Indonesia dalam musik reggae.

Prestasi terbaru yang diraih oleh Tony Q di penghujung tahun 2005 adalah masuknya salah satu lagu dari album ketiganya ”Damai Dengan Cinta” yaitu ”Pat Gulipat” ke dalam Album kompilasi musik dunia Putumayo World Music dengan titel ”Reggae Playground” yang rencananya akan dirilis secara Internasional pada bulan Februari 2006. Sebagai satu-satunya wakil dari benua Asia hal ini juga tidak saja mengaharumkan nama Tony Q sendiri tetapi juga nama Indonesia di mata dunia dan khususnya Musik Reggae ala Indonesia juga dapat lebih dikenal secara Internasional.

Reggae Tidak Harus Rasta

Di Indonesia, reggae hampir selalu diidentikkan dengan rasta. Padahal, reggae dan rasta sesungguhnya adalah dua hal yang berbeda. “Reggae adalah nama genre musik, sedangkan rasta atau singkatan dari rastafari adalah sebuah pilihan jalan hidup, way of life,” ujar Ras Muhamad (23), pemusik reggae yang sudah 12 tahun menekuni dunia reggae di New York dan penganut ajaran filosofi rasta.

Repotnya, di balik ingar-bingar dan kegembiraan yang dibawa reggae, ada stigma yang melekat pada para penggemar musik tersebut. Dan stigma tersebut turut melekat pada filosofi rasta itu sendiri. “Di sini, penggemar musik reggae, atau sering salah kaprah disebut rastafarian, diidentikkan dengan pengisap ganja dan bergaya hidup semaunya, tanpa tujuan,” ungkap Ras yang bernama
asli Muhamad Egar ini.

Padahal, filosofi rasta sesungguhnya justru mengajarkan seseorang hidup bersih, tertib,
dan memiliki prinsip serta tujuan hidup yang jelas. Penganut rasta yang

sesungguhnya menolak minum alkohol, makan daging, dan bahkan mengisap rokok. “Para anggota The Wailers (band asli Bob Marley) tidak ada yang merokok. Merokok menyalahi ajaran rastafari,” papar Ras.

Ras mengungkapkan, tidak semua penggemar reggae adalah penganut rasta, dan sebaliknya, tidak semua penganut rasta harus menyenangi lagu reggae. Reggae diidentikkan dengan rasta karena Bob Marley—pembawa genre musik tersebut ke dunia—adalah seorang penganut rasta.

Ras menambahkan, salah satu bukti bahwa komunitas reggae di Indonesia sebagian besar belum memahami ajaran rastafari adalah tidak adanya pemahaman terhadap hal-hal mendasar dari filosofi itu. “Misalnya waktu saya tanya mereka tentang Marcus Garvey dan Haile Selassie, mereka tidak tahu. Padahal itu adalah dua tokoh utama dalam ajaran rastafari,” ungkap pemuda yang menggelung rambut panjangnya dalam sorban ini.

Pemusik Tony Q Rastafara pun mengakui, meski ia menggunakan embel-embel nama Rastafara, tetapi dia bukan seorang penganut rasta. Tony mencoba memahami ajaran rastafari yang menurut dia bisa diperas menjadi satu hakikat filosofi, yakni cinta damai. “Yang saya ikuti cuma cinta damai itu,” tutur Tony yang tidak mau menyentuh ganja itu.

Namun, meski tidak memahami dan menjalankan seluruh filosofi rastafari, para penggemar dan pelaku reggae di Indonesia mengaku mendapatkan sesuatu di balik musik yang mereka cintai itu. Biasanya, dimulai dari menyenangi musik reggae (dan lirik lagu-lagunya), para penggemar itu kemudian mulai tertarik mempelajari filosofi dan ajaran yang ada di baliknya.

Seperti diakui Hendry Moses Billy, gitaris grup Papa Rasta asal Yogya, yang mengaku musik reggae semakin menguatkan kebenciannya terhadap ketidakadilan dan penyalahgunaan wewenang. Setiap ditilang polisi, ia lebih memilih berdebat daripada “berdamai”. “Masalahnya bukan pada uang, tetapi praktik seperti itu tidak adil,” tandas Moses yang mengaku sering dibuntuti orang tak dikenal saat beli rokok tengah malam karena dikira mau beli ganja.

Sementara Steven mengaku dirinya menjadi lebih bijak dalam memandang hidup sejak menggeluti musik reggae. Musik reggae, terutama yang dipopulerkan Bob Marley, menurut Steven, mengajarkan perdamaian, keadilan, dan antikekerasan. “Jadi kami memberontak terhadap ketidakadilan, tetapi tidak antikemapanan. Kalau reggae tumbuh, maka di Indonesia tidak akan ada perang. Indonesia akan tersenyum dengan reggae,” ujar Steven mantap.

Sila dan Joni dari Bali menegaskan, seorang rasta sejati tidak harus identik dengan penampilan ala Bob Marley. “Rasta sejati itu ada di dalam hati,” tandas Sila sambil mengepalkan tangan kanan untuk menepuk dadanya.

Reggae
memang adalah musik unik bagi Jamaika, ironisnya akarnya berasal dari
New Orleans R&B. Nenek moyang terdekatnya, ska berasal berasal dari
New Orleans R&B yang didengar para musisi Jamaika dari siaran radio
Amrik lewat radio transistor mereka. Dengan berpedoman pada iringan
gitar pas - pasan dan putus - putusadalah interprestasi mereka akan
R&B dan mampu jadi populer di tahun 60an. Selanjutnya semasa musim
panas yang terik, merekapun kepanasan kalo musti mainin ska plus
tarinya, hasilnya lagunya diperlambat dan lahirlah Reggae. Sejak itu,
Reggae terbukti bisa jadi sekuat Blues dan memiliki kekuatan
interprestasi yang juga bisa meminjam dari Rocksteady (dulu) dan bahkan
musik Rock (sekarang). Musik Afrika pada dasarnya ada di kehidupan
sehari-hari, baik itu di jalan, bus, tempat umum, tempat kerja ato
rumah yang jadi semacam semangat saat kondisi sulit dan mampu
memberikan kekuatan dan pesan tersendiri. Hasilnya, Reggae musik bukan
cuma memberikan relaksasi, tapi juga membawa pesan cinta, damai,
kesatuan dan keseimbangan serta mampu mengendurkan ketegangan.

Apa sih Reggae

Reggae sendiri adalah kombinasi dari iringan tradisional Afrika, Amerika dan
Blues serta folk (lagu rakyat) Jamaika. Gaya sintesis ini jelas
menunjukkan keaslian Jamaika dan memasukkan ketukan putus - putus
tersendiri, strumming gitar ke arah atas, pola vokal yang 'berkotbah'
dan lirik yang masih seputar tradisi religius Rastafari. Meski banyak
keuntungan komersial yang sudah didapat dari reggae, Babylon (Jamaika),
pemerintah yang ketat seringkali dianggap membatasi gerak namun bukan
aspek politis Rastafarinya. "Reg-ay" bisa dibilang muncul dari anggapan
bahwa reggae adalah style musik Jamaika yang berdasar musik soul
Amerika namun dengan ritem yang 'dibalik' dan jalinan bass yang
menonjol. Tema yang diangkat emang sering sekitar Rastafari, protes
politik, dan rudie (pahlawan hooligan). Bentuk yang ada sebelumnya (ska
& rocksteady) kelihatan lebih kuat pengaruh musik Afrika -
Amerika-nya walaupun permainan gitarnya juga mengisi 'lubang - lubang'
iringan yang kosong serta drum yang kompleks. Di Reggae kontemporer,
permainan drum diambil dari ritual Rastafarian yang cenderung mistis
dan sakral, karena itu temponya akan lebih kalem dan bertitik berat
pada masalah sosial, politik serta pesan manusiawi.
